Requirements of Granting Ph.D. Degree

PhD in ASE

The Graduate Institute of Applied Science and Engineering grants Ph.D. degree under the following requirements:

1. Completing the doctoral study within 9 years.
2. Course:
   1. 16 (minimum) credits of acceptable professional courses, which shall include at least 3 credits non-professional (or integrated course)
   2. 4 credits of group seminar and 4 credits of individual study
   3. 12 credits of thesis (dissertation)
3. Language requirement (one of the following):
4. 3 credits of ‘English Writing of Technology Paper’
5. Previous degree acquired from an English-speaking country
6. Written and oral comprehensive examinations within first three years
7. One or two SCI journal papers (depend on research field)
8. Final oral examination (thesis defense)  

PhD in Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry grants Ph.D. degree under the following requirements:

1. Completing the doctoral study within 9 years.
2. Before graduation, Ph.D. students have to take at least 28 credits in total. (Thesis accounts for 2 credits only.)
3. The comprehensive examinations
   1.  Chemistry Group:
      1. Written comprehensive examination within the first three years of the Ph.D. study
      2. Oral comprehensive examination of a proposal which is unrelated to the degree dissertation
   2. Biomedical Chemistry Group:Written comprehensive examination between 2nd and 4th year of the Ph.D. study
4. Two SCI journal papers or one SCI journal paper plus a new patent with only one major contributor
5. Final oral examination (thesis defense)
